Burco, Somaliland — A government-led anti-corruption investigation into Burco Municipality has resulted in the arrest of a senior local government official, according to a press release by the Somaliland’s Auditor General office.

The investigation wass being carried out by a team from the Somaliland’s National Auditor General. Officials say the inquiry focused on financial management, procurement procedures, and administrative operations within the municipality.

Preliminary findings reportedly uncovered evidence of financial irregularities and misuse of public funds. As a result, the municipality’s operations director along with other officials were taken into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities stated that the probe is still underway and that further actions may follow depending on the outcome of the audit. They emphasized that the investigation is part of broader government efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and good governance across public institutions.

No formal charges have yet been announced, and officials stressed that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Somaliland government has repeatedly pledged zero tolerance for corruption, particularly at the municipal level, where public funds are critical for service delivery and local development.
