Washington (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi has been invited to deliver a keynote address at the Hudson Institute, a prominent Washington, D.C.-based policy research organization, during his visit to the United States.
The event, titled “Somaliland as a Strategic Partner in the Horn of Africa,” is scheduled for September 14, 2026, and will be held as an in-person, invite-only event. According to the Hudson Institute, President Irro will deliver the keynote speech before taking part in a fireside discussion with Joshua Meservey, a Senior Fellow at the institute who specializes in great-power competition in Africa, African geopolitics and counterterrorism.
Hudson Institute’s announcement describes President Irro’s appearance as his first visit to the United States since winning Somaliland’s presidential election in November 2024. The institute says the event will examine Somaliland’s strategic importance at a time of heightened geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
The Hudson Institute has highlighted developments involving the Red Sea, the war in Iran, Houthi activity in Yemen, China’s growing influence in Africa, and Russian and Iranian engagement in East Africa as factors increasing the strategic importance of Somaliland to Western interests.
What Is the Hudson Institute?
The Hudson Institute is an American policy research organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1961 by strategist Herman Kahn, it conducts research and hosts discussions on national security, defense, foreign policy, economics, technology and international affairs. Its stated mission is to promote American leadership for a secure, free and prosperous future.
The institute is influential in Washington because it provides research, policy recommendations and forums where senior government officials, lawmakers, diplomats, military and national-security specialists, and international leaders discuss issues affecting U.S. policy. Hudson’s work is aimed at informing policymakers and shaping public debate on major strategic questions facing the United States and its allies.
Hudson has also maintained a significant focus on Africa and the Horn of Africa. Its researchers have published analysis on Somaliland’s geopolitical position, the Ethiopia-Somaliland relationship, regional security and the implications of developments around the Red Sea.
For Somaliland, the invitation therefore provides President Irro with a high-profile platform in Washington to present his government’s foreign-policy priorities and discuss Somaliland’s strategic value in the Horn of Africa directly with American policy experts and other influential audiences.
The invitation also comes against a backdrop of increasing U.S. attention to Somaliland’s location along the Gulf of Aden and its proximity to the Red Sea, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
The invitation also follows a history of engagement between Somaliland’s former presidents and U.S. policymakers. Former President Dahir Riyale Kahin, who led Somaliland from 2002 to 2010, visited the United States in 2008. His successor, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Silanyo,” who served as president from 2010 to 2017, visited Washington in 2013. Former President Muse Bihi Abdi, who served from 2017 to 2024, also travelled to Washington in 2022, where he held meetings focused on Somaliland’s diplomatic and strategic interests.
President Irro’s Hudson Institute appearance, however, represents a particularly notable policy-platform engagement because he is scheduled to speak directly at a Washington think tank whose mission includes shaping debates on U.S. national security, foreign policy and America’s role in the international system.
