Cabinet reshuffle looms as president Irro approaches second Anniversary in Office
Hargeisa (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) is reportedly planning a major cabinet reshuffle that could include dismissing ministers, moving officials to new positions and appointing new members to his government.
The reported changes come amid growing public criticism of the performance of some government officials. Citizens have called on the president to review his cabinet and appoint officials who can better address public concerns.
Since taking office, Irro has faced calls to make changes to his administration and improve the performance of government institutions.
Sources familiar with the matter say the president is considering changes to the Council of Ministers and other government institutions. The proposed reshuffle could also bring experienced political figures into the administration.
Former officials may join government
Several prominent political figures are reportedly being considered for government positions. Some have held senior posts in previous Somaliland administrations.
The possible changes come as the government faces political, economic and security challenges at home, alongside developments in the Horn of Africa that could affect Somaliland.
Senior officials could lose their positions
The reshuffle could extend beyond ministers to include director generals in government ministries and other institutions, according to the sources.
The names of officials who may be dismissed or appointed have not been confirmed.
If implemented, the changes would mark a significant adjustment to Irro’s administration as public expectations for improved government performance continue to grow.
Reshuffle ahead of second anniversary
President Irro’s administration is approaching its second anniversary in December 2026, providing a possible moment for a review of his government’s leadership and performance.
In April 2026, President Irro carried out his first cabinet reshuffle since taking office, dismissing three ministers and appointing 13 officials to various government positions. The changes affected the ministries of Water Development, Agricultural Development, and Information and Communication.
Irro announced his first cabinet on December 14, 2024, two days after taking office following his election victory in November 2024.
The initial cabinet comprised 48 members, including 28 ministers, three ministers of state and 17 deputy ministers. The appointments were announced through presidential decrees.
The proposed reshuffle could bring changes to the composition of that administration as the president prepares for its third year in office.
The presidency has not officially announced any changes, and the reported dismissals and appointments remain unconfirmed.
