Washington (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has arrived in Washington, D.C., leading a high-level delegation for a working visit expected to include meetings with U.S. officials and other key stakeholders, according to a press release issued by the Somaliland Presidency.
President Irro and his delegation landed safely at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), where they were warmly welcomed by members of the Somaliland community in the United States and supporters of Somaliland, the Presidency said.
The president is accompanied by the First Lady of Somaliland and senior government officials, including the ministers of foreign affairs, civil aviation and defense, as well as the president’s senior advisers on economic affairs and foreign policy.
The Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives, the Minister of the Presidency and a senior adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also expected to join the delegation in Washington.
According to the statement, President Irro’s meetings during the visit will focus on security cooperation, economic ties, investment and Somaliland’s international recognition efforts.
The delegation is also expected to highlight Somaliland’s strategic position in the Horn of Africa and its proximity to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea maritime routes, areas the government considers important to regional security and trade.
The visit comes as Somaliland seeks to expand its engagement with the United States and develop partnerships around shared security and economic interests.
President Irro is expected to present Somaliland’s political position and its aspirations for international recognition during his engagements with U.S. policymakers and other stakeholders.
The Presidency described the visit as part of Somaliland’s broader efforts to advance its national interests, strengthen international partnerships and promote cooperation in areas including security, trade and investment.
