Washington DC (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro visited the United States Capitol on Monday, where he held meetings with members of the U.S. Congress as part of his engagements in Washington, D.C.
President Irro met with Congressman John Rose (R-Tennessee) and Congressman John Moolenaar (R-Michigan). Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Somaliland and the United States, with particular attention to security, strategic interests, trade, investment and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The President highlighted Somaliland’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near the Red Sea, emphasizing its potential role in supporting the security of vital international maritime routes and broader regional stability.
He also outlined Somaliland’s interest in developing a partnership with the United States based on shared interests, practical cooperation and tangible outcomes. Areas highlighted included security cooperation, expanded trade, increased U.S. investment and stronger economic ties.
President Irro’s Capitol Hill meetings followed his appearance the previous evening at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., where he delivered a speech outlining Somaliland’s investment opportunities, natural resources and strategic importance in the security landscape of the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
