Hargeisa (SLpost) – The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Science of the Republic of Somaliland has graduated 200 female teachers from the National Teacher Training College (NTTC) in Hargeisa, marking another milestone in the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s education sector.
The graduation ceremony, presided over by Minister of Education Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf, was attended by the Ministry’s Director General, Abdirahman Hussein Hersi, senior ministry officials, the college administration, cabinet ministers, and representatives from various government institutions. The event took place at the Maansoor Hotel in Hargeisa.
The newly qualified educators completed intensive training focused on modern teaching methods, classroom management, and pedagogical best practices. They are now eligible to teach in primary and secondary schools across Somaliland, where they are expected to help improve the quality of education and contribute to the development of the country’s future workforce.
The graduating class represents the fourth cohort to complete the National Teacher Training College programme, which is implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the international humanitarian organization, Save the Children International (SCI).
Addressing the ceremony, National Teacher Training College Chairperson Rahma Abdirisaq Mohamed highlighted the institution’s role in enhancing Somaliland’s education system by producing qualified teachers. She praised the graduates for their commitment throughout the programme and acknowledged the support provided by education authorities from the Sahil, Sheikh, and Marodijeh regions, whose contributions helped ensure the success of the training.
Director General Abdirahman Hussein Hersi congratulated the graduates, college leadership, and instructors, commending their dedication and the successful completion of the programme. He described the graduates as an important addition to Somaliland’s teaching workforce.
Other speakers emphasised the importance of investing in teacher development and encouraged the graduates to uphold high professional standards as they begin their careers in classrooms across the country.
In his closing address, Minister Duale congratulated the graduates and their families, urging the newly qualified teachers to return to their respective communities and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to deliver quality education.
The graduation comes as Somaliland continues implementing reforms aimed at improving educational quality, expanding access to schools, and strengthening teacher capacity across the country. Government officials have repeatedly identified education as one of the key pillars of the National Development Plan, alongside healthcare, infrastructure, economic development, and good governance.
The addition of 200 professionally trained female teachers is expected to strengthen classroom instruction nationwide while promoting greater participation of women in the education sector. Officials believe the graduates will not only address staffing needs in schools but also serve as role models, particularly for girls pursuing education in communities across Somaliland.
As Somaliland continues investing in teacher training and educational institutions, government officials say the country’s future prosperity will increasingly depend on developing a highly skilled, educated generation capable of driving innovation, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
