President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi’s first official U.S. visit since taking office comes as Somaliland seeks stronger ties with Washington, expanded security and economic cooperation, and greater international recognition.
Hargeisa (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) departed the country today for the United States as part of an official working visit aimed at advancing Somaliland’s diplomatic and strategic interests.
The President’s visit comes at a time when Somaliland is seeking to strengthen its international partnerships and expand engagement with key global powers. During his stay in the United States, President Irro is expected to hold meetings with U.S. officials, policymakers, members of the Somali-Somaliland community, and other stakeholders.
According to reports, President Irro to travelled through the United Arab Emirates before continuing to the United States, where he is expected to hold meetings with senior U.S. officials and other key stakeholders.
Discussions are expected to focus on diplomatic relations, security cooperation, economic investment, trade, and Somaliland’s broader international engagement. The visit is also seen as an opportunity for the Somaliland government to present its position on regional stability and its strategic importance in the Horn of Africa.
Recognition Campaign Takes Centre Stage
One of the most significant issues surrounding the visit is Somaliland’s long-running campaign for international recognition.
The trip follows a major shift in Somaliland’s diplomatic environment after Israel formally recognised Somaliland in December 2025, making it the first country to do so. The development has added momentum to Hargeisa’s efforts to secure wider international recognition.
Reports indicate that President Irro is seeking to use the current diplomatic momentum to strengthen Somaliland’s engagement with Washington. However, U.S. recognition of Somaliland has not been confirmed, and any reports of a possible meeting between President Irro and U.S. President Donald Trump should be treated as reported expectations rather than an officially confirmed outcome.
Security and Economic Cooperation
Beyond the question of recognition, the visit is expected to address practical areas of cooperation, including regional security, investment, trade and economic development.
Somaliland has sought to portray itself as a strategically located and relatively stable partner in a region facing complex security challenges. President Irro’s administration is expected to emphasize Somaliland’s potential role in supporting stability and strengthening commercial links across the Gulf of Aden and the wider Horn of Africa.

President Irro’s U.S. trip comes amid renewed calls for Washington to reconsider its policy toward Somaliland. Former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Tibor Nagy has urged President Donald Trump to recognise Somaliland, pointing to its strategic position on the Gulf of Aden, the importance of Berbera Port and Berbera Airport, and Somaliland’s growing security and diplomatic ties with international partners. Nagy’s remarks have added political weight to Hargeisa’s diplomatic campaign as President Irro begins his visit, with Somaliland seeking to persuade U.S. policymakers that formal recognition could serve American strategic interests in the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
