Minneapolis (SLpost)- Veteran Somali singer, actor, and composer Ahmed Ali Egal, one of the most celebrated figures in Somali music and performing arts, has died in the United States, bringing to a close a career that spanned more than five decades and left an enduring mark on Somali culture.
Ahmed Ali Egal passed away on Friday in Minnesota, where he had been living in recent years. News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from artists, public figures, and Somali communities around the world, who remembered him as one of the defining voices of modern Somali music.
Born in 1950 in Galkayo, Somalia, Ahmed Ali Egal began his artistic career in the late 1960s during a period widely regarded as the golden age of Somali music. He quickly gained recognition for his distinctive voice, commanding stage presence, and ability to blend poetry, melody, and storytelling into performances that resonated with audiences across generations.

Ahmed Ali Egal is also remembered for his personal life, having been married to two of Somalia’s most celebrated female artists, Maryan Mursal Issa and Khadra Dahir Ige, with whom he had children. Although Khadra passed away in July 2022, Maryan Muse, who currently resides in Hargeisa, spoke publicly following news of Ahmed Ali Egal’s death. Visibly overcome with grief, she offered her condolences and prayed that Allah grants him His mercy and eternal peace, paying tribute to a man whose contributions to Somali music and culture will be remembered for generations.
He leaves behind a lasting artistic heritage that will continue to be celebrated by generations of Somalis both at home and across the diaspora.
