HARGEISA — The Republic of Somaliland is gaining increased international attention as its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden positions it at the centre of evolving global economic and security interests.
Since restoring its independence in 1991, Somaliland has built stable governance institutions, maintained its own currency and security forces, and established a track record of peace and democratic development in a region often affected by instability.
Officials and analysts say this stability, combined with Somaliland’s proximity to one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, is driving growing interest from international partners seeking trade and investment opportunities.
At the forefront of this transformation is the port city of Berbera. Backed by significant investment from DP World, the port has expanded into a modern logistics hub, strengthening Somaliland’s role as a gateway for regional commerce, including trade links with landlocked Ethiopia.
Government officials have framed these developments as part of a broader national strategy to position Somaliland as a reliable partner for international business and security cooperation.
“Somaliland offers stability, openness to investment, and a strategic location that benefits global trade,” a senior official said, highlighting the country’s efforts to attract foreign partnerships.
Beyond geopolitics, Somaliland is also gradually emerging as a destination for travellers interested in culture and history. The العاصمة, Hargeisa, provides access to local markets and cultural life, while the Laas Geel cave paintings remain among Africa’s most important prehistoric heritage sites.
Along the Red Sea coast, Berbera offers largely untouched beaches with potential for future tourism development.
Officials acknowledge that infrastructure is still developing but say investment in roads, airports and hospitality is a priority aimed at unlocking the country’s tourism and economic potential.
As international attention grows, Somaliland is positioning itself as both a strategic partner and an emerging destination — seeking to translate its stability and geographic advantage into long-term economic growth and global engagement.
