Hargeisa (SLpost) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) on Saturday held a high-level meeting with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to discuss accelerating the implementation of a new digital voter registration system aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral process.
According to a presidential Spokesperson statement, the National Electoral Commission presented President Cirro with a comprehensive implementation plan, technical framework and operational timetable for the nationwide rollout of the new voter registration exercise. The initiative is expected to be carried out across all regions and districts of Somaliland.
During the meeting, the Commission briefed the President on the technological foundations of the new registration system, explaining that it is designed to utilize modern digital solutions to establish a secure, transparent and accurate voter register that aligns with internationally recognized electoral standards.
The Commission said the new system is intended to enhance the participation of eligible citizens in future elections while improving the overall integrity, efficiency and credibility of Somaliland’s democratic and electoral processes.
President Cirro commended the National Electoral Commission for its continued efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral institutions and encouraged its members to maintain their commitment to delivering a high-quality voter registration process that reaches all eligible citizens.
The President emphasized that establishing a modern and reliable voter registration system is a cornerstone of Somaliland’s democratic development. He noted that an accurate voter register is essential for safeguarding citizens’ electoral rights and ensuring the conduct of free, fair and credible elections that enjoy broad public confidence.
The Government’s Commitment
According to the presidential statement, President Cirro assured the Commission of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its financial responsibilities for the implementation of the voter registration program. He pledged that the administration would provide the necessary funding and institutional support to ensure the successful execution of the nationwide exercise.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation in expediting the technical and administrative preparations required for the registration process. They also underscored the importance of leveraging modern technology to further strengthen Somaliland’s reputation for conducting peaceful, democratic and credible elections.
