Hargeisa (SLpost)- Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) departed Hargeisa on Monday evening for an unannounced foreign visit, with the Somaliland government yet to disclose the purpose of the trip or confirm his final destination.
According to information obtained by local media, President Cirro is believed to be travelling to Kenya, where he is expected to hold meetings with Western diplomats based in Nairobi. The Somaliland government has not officially confirmed either destination.
The president departed from Egal International Airport in Hargeisa aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight at approximately 6:00 p.m. East Africa Time. The aircraft’s first scheduled stop was Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Officials have not released details of the delegation accompanying President Cirro. However, his wife and his private secretary were seen travelling with him.
Trip Comes Amid Regional Maritime Security Changes
President Cirro’s overseas visit coincides with significant geopolitical developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Earlier on Monday, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia formally joined a Saudi Arabia-led maritime security alliance aimed at protecting the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
It was not immediately clear whether President Cirro’s trip was connected to those regional developments.
The Bab el-Mandeb is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, serving as a vital shipping route connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. The waterway plays a critical role in global trade and international energy supplies.
