Hargeisa, Somaliland (SLpost)- Former Somaliland President, Muse Bihi Abdi, has called on the Somaliland government to carefully assess ongoing geopolitical developments and their potential impact on the country’s national interests, warning against the risk of political miscalculations amid a rapidly changing international landscape.
In a message posted on his Facebook page marking the 66th anniversary of Somaliland’s independence from British colonial rule on June 26, 1960, Bihi congratulated Somalilanders at home and abroad while reflecting on the lessons of the country’s brief independence before its union with Italian-Somalia on July 1, 1960 to form The then Somali Republic.
However, much of his statement focused on contemporary global affairs and the need for strategic political foresight.
“The world is facing major political transformations and turbulence,” Bihi said, pointing to conflicts in the Middle East and their growing impact on the Horn of Africa.
The former president highlighted the significance of ongoing developments involving Iran and the United States, arguing that the outcome of diplomatic engagements between the two countries could reshape political, security, and economic dynamics across the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
Bihi also suggested that influential Muslim-majority states, including Iran, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, could move toward closer cooperation as geopolitical tensions evolve. He noted that growing disagreements between the leaderships of the United States and Israel could contribute to shifts in regional alliances with far-reaching consequences.
Against this backdrop, Bihi urged Somaliland’s government to conduct a thorough assessment of emerging international agreements, alliances, and political realignments.
“It is essential to carefully analyze the implications and outcomes of ongoing political changes to avoid uncertainty and strategic mistakes,” he said.
The former president further stressed that Somaliland’s policymakers should ensure that both current and future decisions are aligned with the country’s national interests, emphasizing the importance of learning from past political experiences.
Political observers are likely to interpret Biixi’s remarks as a call for a more proactive and strategic foreign policy approach at a time when the Horn of Africa is increasingly affected by competition among regional and global powers.
