HARGEISA (SLpost)- Former Somaliland Minister of Communications and Technology, Dr. Abdiwali Sheikh Sufi, has reiterated the Kulmiye Party’s support for establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of Somaliland and the State of Israel, saying the party’s position on the matter has been clear for some time.
According to Dr. Sufi, the opposition Kulmiye Party supports Somaliland’s continued pursuit of international recognition and the development of diplomatic ties with Israel. He added that the party also backs the expansion of Somaliland’s diplomatic representation abroad, including the establishment of a Somaliland embassy in West Jerusalem.
“The Kulmiye Party has already made its position clear,” Dr. Sufi said. “It supports the international recognition of the Republic of Somaliland, the establishment of diplomatic relations between Somaliland and Israel, and the opening of a Somaliland embassy in West Jerusalem.”
Somaliland declared the restoration of its independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated as a self-governing territory with its own government, institutions, and security forces. However, it has not received widespread international recognition as a sovereign state.
Kulmiye’s position comes a week after the leader of the opposition Kaah Party publicly opposed the establishment of a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem.
Kaah Party Chairman Mahmoud Hashi Abdi accused the Somaliland government of handling its relations and agreements with the Government of Israel in a non-transparent manner, arguing that such engagements should be conducted openly and with appropriate public and institutional oversight.
