NEW YORK (SLpost)- A delegation of senior Somaliland officials, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and including members of the Cabinet, has taken part in a large diplomatic rally near the United Nations headquarters in New York, calling for Somaliland to receive full international recognition as an independent state.
The gathering, dubbed the “Somaliland Recognition Rally,” brought together Somaliland officials and thousands of Somalilanders who travelled from across the United States and Canada to participate in a major public gathering outside the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The rally was held as the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly entered its high-level week, drawing heads of state, heads of government, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from across the international community. The gathering provided a prominent platform for Somalilanders to reaffirm their longstanding call for international recognition and to highlight Somaliland’s case before an international audience gathered at the UN.
Participants carried Somaliland’s distinctive three-colour flag throughout the demonstration, with large numbers of flags visible across the area in front of the United Nations complex.
Somaliland recognition campaign
The Somaliland delegation has been in the United States in recent days as part of diplomatic and political engagements aimed at highlighting Somaliland’s longstanding demand for international recognition.
During the demonstration, Somaliland officials and supporters called for the international community to formally recognise Somaliland as a sovereign state, reiterating their country’s position that it has maintained its own governing institutions and political system for decades.
The gathering also attracted members of the Somaliland diaspora from across North America, with organisers describing the turnout as numbering in the thousands.
Security measures were in place around the gathering, with U.S. authorities responsible for maintaining public safety in the area surrounding the demonstration and the United Nations complex.
The large Somaliland flags carried by participants created a prominent visual presence outside the UN headquarters, where the demonstration continued to draw attention from supporters and observers.
Somaliland and Israel Cooperation Dilema
Separately, the President of Somaliland, who did not participate in the demonstration, held a meeting in New York with Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations.
The meeting formed part of the Somaliland president’s engagements in New York, where diplomatic issues and Somaliland’s international recognition efforts remain central to his activities.
The presence of senior Somaliland officials and supporters in New York comes at a time when Somaliland continues to pursue greater international diplomatic engagement and recognition.
