President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) calls on newly appointed ambassadors and diplomatic representatives to strengthen international partnerships, promote Somaliland’s interests and mobilise diaspora communities

Hargeisa (SLpost)- President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) has urged Somaliland’s newly appointed ambassadors, special envoy and deputy ambassadors to strengthen the country’s diplomatic engagement and protect its national interests as they prepare to take up their assignments abroad.

During a meeting with the newly appointed diplomatic representatives in the presidential palace on Saturday, the president emphasised the importance of carrying out their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and a strong commitment to safeguarding Somaliland’s national interests, dignity and international reputation.

The meeting was attended by Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdirahman Dahir Adan Bakaal.

President Emphasises Strategic Importance of Diplomacy

In a press release by presidential spokesman, President Irro said diplomatic appointments involved responsibilities extending beyond formal representation, describing them as national duties that carry Somaliland’s statehood, strategic interests and long-term aspirations.

He noted that Somaliland’s diplomatic representatives had an important role to play at a time when international attention was increasingly focused on the country’s political status, governance and strategic position in the Horn of Africa and the wider world.

The president called on the diplomats to demonstrate competence, loyalty and accountability while building stronger relationships with the governments and institutions of the countries to which they have been assigned.

He urged them to prioritise mutual understanding, cooperation and shared interests, with the aim of securing meaningful diplomatic, political, economic and development opportunities for Somaliland.

Diaspora Engagement a Diplomatic Priority

President Irro also highlighted the importance of engaging Somaliland diaspora communities in countries where the newly appointed representatives will serve.

He called on the diplomats to strengthen coordination among Somalilanders abroad, encourage their participation in national affairs and mobilise their experience, professional expertise and international networks in support of Somaliland’s interests.

The president said stronger links between diplomatic missions and diaspora communities could help promote national unity while expanding Somaliland’s international engagement and opportunities for cooperation.

Diplomats Pledge Commitment to National Priorities

The statement by the spokesman says that the newly appointed ambassadors, special envoy and deputy ambassadors reaffirmed their commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to them.

They pledged to discharge their duties with integrity, professionalism, competence and accountability, while placing Somaliland’s national interests, dignity and reputation at the centre of their diplomatic work.

They also committed to advancing the country’s diplomatic objectives and strategic priorities through sustained engagement with international partners.

The meeting underscores the administration’s emphasis on strengthening Somaliland’s diplomatic representation, expanding international partnerships and mobilising its diaspora as part of broader efforts to advance its political and economic aspirations abroad.
