Hargeisa (SLpost)- The Somaliland government has warned residents across the country to prepare for heavy rainfall, urging government institutions, electricity companies, security forces and the public to take precautionary measures against potential flooding and other weather-related hazards.

Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness and government spokesperson Barkhad Jama Batuun said the government was communicating weather-related warnings issued by relevant authorities to strengthen preparedness and protect public safety.

The warning comes as the Somaliland Information Management Center (IMC), working with the Ministry of Agricultural Development and receiving technical support from FAO SWALIM, forecast moderate to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Somaliland between October 7 and 13, 2026.

According to the forecast, the heaviest cumulative rainfall is expected in localized areas of Borama, Gabiley, Hargeisa, Sheikh and Burao. Some areas in southern Borama, central Gabiley, central and southwestern Hargeisa, southeastern Sheikh and northern Burao could receive between 150 and 250 millimetres of rainfall during the forecast period.

Other areas are forecast to receive between 100 and 150 millimetres, while moderate rainfall of 50–100 millimetres is expected across wider parts of the country.

Government Calls for Urgent Preparedness

Batuun urged residents to take the necessary precautions ahead of the anticipated rainfall and follow official safety instructions to reduce the risks associated with severe weather.

The government has also instructed electricity companies to prepare for adverse weather conditions and take measures to protect infrastructure and minimise potential disruptions to electricity services.

Authorities have highlighted road safety as another priority, stressing the need to restrict vehicle movements where conditions warrant, particularly in areas affected by flooding or dangerous road conditions.

Regional administrations and government officials have been urged to monitor weather developments closely and hold regular coordination meetings to assess emerging risks and implement appropriate measures to safeguard communities.

Flash Flooding and Infrastructure Risks

The IMC forecast warns that intense rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, surface runoff, soil erosion, temporary flooding, infrastructure damage and transport disruptions, particularly in vulnerable locations.

Residents have been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads, seasonal rivers and drainage channels during and immediately after heavy rainfall. Drivers and communities in low-lying areas are also urged to exercise caution and follow instructions from relevant authorities.

While the expected rainfall could improve water availability, pasture conditions, soil moisture and the replenishment of shallow water sources, its benefits will depend partly on how communities and authorities manage the associated risks.

Public Urged to Follow Official Warnings

The Somaliland government has called on residents to remain vigilant, follow official announcements and avoid potentially dangerous areas during periods of heavy rainfall.

Regional authorities, emergency services and essential service providers are expected to remain alert and coordinate their response as weather conditions develop.

With the forecast covering October 7–13, preparedness and timely public warnings remain essential to reducing the potential impact of heavy rainfall on lives, infrastructure and essential services across Somaliland.
